candlelight: life after the storm

Project type

short documentary film

Date

2018

Location

Puerto Rico

“Candlelight” was created in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. It aimed to highlight the challenges, pitfalls, and response efforts several months after the storm. As writer, director, and producer, I assembled a team of young filmmakers to produce an experimental short documentary that combined historical fiction with sampled footage from social and traditional media. This approach showcased the contrast between how the storm's aftermath was portrayed and how people actually experienced it.

The film had its Puerto Rico premiere at the Rincon International Film Festival, where it won Best of Fest, Best Short Doc, and Audience Choice. It also screened off-competition at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, it was shown at the Atlanta Underground Film Festival, winning Best Short Doc, and at the WIFT Atlanta Short Film Showcase, where it earned Best Female Representation. The film has also been featured at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and the Portland Film Festival.
